Las Brumas

Country of origin: El Salvador

 Coffee Varietal: SL28

  • Region: Sonsonate, near Santa Ana city
  • Farm: Finca Las Brumas: Juan Jose Ernesto 'Neto' Menéndez Argüello
  • Altitude: 1,450 – 1,700 metres (5,000 – 5,600 feet) above sea level

Climate:  The most important feature of this plantation is its very misty microclimate, hence the farm name Finca Las Brumas (Spanish for mists).  The region as a whole has a tropical savanna climate with a dry season from November to May.  Temperature average 24 degrees C (range 17 – 34). The average rainfall is 2.4 metres.  Natural flora and fauna includes mountain trees, wildflowers, deer, squirrels, armadillos and snakes.

The coffee plantation:  Las Brumas is about an hour’s drive from Santa Ana. It has a cultivated coffee area of 60 hectares, producing 600 bags of coffee / year.  The plantation has rich, deep and fertile volcanic soil; local volcanic eruptions: Ilamatepec and Izalco.  The farm’s misty microclimate results from the impact of warm air from the Pacific Ocean and the high peaks of Los Volcanes National Park.  This reduces the amount of daylight that the coffee trees receive, which in turn slows photosynthesis, prolongs the maturation process, imparting the mature aroma, sweetness, acidity and flavour of the coffee beans.

Coffee processing system: washed. The “washed” system uses water to wash the mucilage off the coffee beans which are then dried

Tasting notes: Sweet lemon icing to start.  The sweetness lingers with clementine, brown sugar and finishes with an aftertaste of passionfruit and orange.
